Perfect Hell photo exhibition recap

Analog photo showing a big crowd at a photo exhibition. The top layer shows a white custom artwork that reads ”Perfect HELL“.

PERFECT HELL is the memorable title by Dennis Scholz’s photo exhibition and very first solo show that took place on the 14th of December at the magnificently pink-colored Safelight Berlin store. We are stilled thrilled and overwhelmed by the hundreds of people that pulled up and stayed all night, showing much love and giving endless appreciation for the project.

The Saturday started by setting up the exhibition at the Safelight store, which can be found in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg area. The specialists for analog photography not only provided a safe space for this unique setup, but also took care about the entire processing, scanning and printing, ensuring the highest standards for fine art prints that very night.

Making last minutes adjustments with a sensitive focus and perception for details, the artist Dennis Scholz took a last breath to reflect on the past few weeks of preparing the event. The project itself hasn’t been a simple deep dive into his personal archive. Dennis came up with the concept of showing doubles that either subtly communicate an ambiguity or contradictory. He worked intensively on the project and managed to get all shots done only in two months, paying his homage to the life in the streets of Berlin with a distinctive fast-moving nature — even though the entire project was shot rather traditional on analog Kodak color film.

Perfect Hell —

Exploring Berlin’s beautiful chaos

When asked about the artist’s intention behind the project and its catchy title, Dennis quotes:

”I chose the title very intentionally because the two words are so opposite. The whole exhibition is built around pairs of images, each showing something very contrasting or contradictory. The idea is to shine a light on Berlin through its contrasts, as I perceive them—these little or big contrasts, these sharp cuts. It’s about showing situations where the same object or place is used in completely different ways by different people. The goal is to highlight these contradictions that, when placed side by side, actually end up working together in a surprisingly harmonious way.“

But there was even more to celebrate that very night. Alongside the exhibition, we released a photo zine with the same title, that turned out to be a 44-page analog photo manifest of the project. It was given away to all attendees during the event. Furthermore, the highly-anticipated HUF x Kodak capsule was exclusively launched that night.

And we managed the extension of that night quite well, spending the entire exhibition with great photography, lots of good chit-chats, free Moretti beers and celebrating Berlin’s unique cultural relevance and vibrancy. Therefore, we would like to leave you all by saying “Thank you” and hope to see y’all next time again.
